Some shows are worth remembering. We are keeping a few of the memorable shows from the past on our archive for, I guess, sentimental reasons.

tiny '06

small pieces under $200

Wednesday, November 15th - Sunday, December 24th

Good things come in small packages, and that's the idea behind tiny:  small pieces with small prices.  With work from over 80 local artists the show promises to have something for everyone, from cityscapes, landscapes and portraits to jewelry, mixed media pieces and sculpture.  We'll bring out new pieces every day, so the show will continue to evolve.  Click to see a list of artists participating in the show; some advance photos are below.  Whether you're looking for the perfect gift or something for yourself, think tiny!

Brandon Smith

solo show

Wednesday, October 18th - Sunday, October, 29th

Oakland painter Brandon Smith is known for his striking cityscapes and studies of urban life.  "I'm just drawn to the telephone poles, wires and buildings:  the angular compositions and horizontal and vertical lines."  We are delighted to display 30 of Brandon's paintings in his first one-man show.

Brandon's paintings capture everyday moments--reading a menu, or riding the bus--and often have a furtive quality, carrying the viewer right into the scene.  Many of the pieces in the show reflect Brandon's experience of the Bay Area.  "I worked in coffee shops and as a waiter, and the cafe scenes in the show are images that are familiar to me."  Brandon lives in the East Bay, and several paintings in the show depict Oakland landmarks, including the Fox Theater and the flatiron building at Telegraph and Broadway.   Other pieces depict the San Francisco neighborhoods he frequents, including South of Market where he teaches at the Academy of Art University.  "I am not painting to reproduce what I see like a photograph, but to take the key characteristics and describe them in as few strokes of my paintbrush as possible to give the pieces life and movement."  Brandon has won several awards for his work and has been featured in both Southwest Art Magazine and American Art Collector Magazine.

Nicholas Coley:  Solo Show

November 1st - November 11th, 2006

San  Francisco painter Nicholas Coley captures the light and color of the Bay Area in a way all his own.   Nicholas may be a familiar sight to many:  he paints his cityscapes en plein air, standing on street corners and often talking with interested onlookers.  The show includes a vivid variety of Bay Area scenes, including a number from our neighborhood.

Salvaged:  Art based on Recycled Materials

September 13th - October 15th, 2006

Dozens of artists have contributed work based on recycled materials, transforming the cast-offs of everyday life into treasures with a (second) life all their own.  Pieces will run the gamut from assemblages and sculpture to paintings, encaustics and jewelry.  We'll have pieces from familiar favorites--including Rab Terry, MariNaomi, 3D-Edddy, Ferris Plock, James "Ganyan" Garcia, and Lola--as well as a host of new artists.  We're especially happy to be displaying work from a number of artists like Mike Farruggia and Michael Kerbow, who are alums of the popular art program at the San Francisco Dump, as well as pieces from our friends at CraftGym, a neighborhood business that provides craft instruction and studio space.

Beach

August 2nd - August 13th, 2006

Art inspired by the ocean and water.  Work will include paintings by Brandon Smith, Laura Williams, Dennis King and Chris Grabowski, resin assemblages by Lola, a new selection of fish sculpture by Adelle Caunce, figurative paintings by Carol Aust, drawings by Andrew Klein and Michele Feder, Venetian plaster panels by Rab Terry, and more.

Fresh Women

May 17th - June 4th, 2006

Fresh Women showcases work from the art collective of the same name.  Fresh Women is comprised of five Bay Area artists:  Michelle Wilcove (installation), Michele King (mixed media), Ann Maley (photography), Rena Buchgraber (photography), and Elisabeth Scheidl (painting).  Their pieces are completed individually but when viewed together represent a collaborative viewpoint rich with color, texture and images.

Hot Wax

January 25th - February 12th, 2006

We're happy to be presenting a show of encaustics, work made from pigmented wax.  Pieces in the show illustrate the wide range of artists working in this medium in the Bay Area:  everything from landscapes and abstract pieces to figurative work, sculpture and the ever-popular "phobias" from Brian Behnke.  The show will be a chance to explore this popular medium, which has been in use since ancient times.

Fun+Games

November 2nd - November 27th, 2005

reception:  Saturday, November 5th, 4-8 pm

A big group show of work inspired by toys, games, sports and all things fun.  Over 30 artists will be participating, and work will include everything from a big painting of Barry Bonds hitting a home run to sterling silver toys, painted skateboards, comics and handmade toys.

The George Bush Voodoo Dolls
